Sports Premium
What is the Sport Premium?
The government has provided additional funding since 2013 to physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.
Accountability
Since this time, schools have been held to account over how they spend their additional, ring-fenced funding. Ofsted work to strengthen the coverage of PE and sport within the “Inspectors’ handbook” and give guidance so that both schools and inspectors know how sport and PE will be assessed in future as part of the school’s overall provision.
Schools are required to include details of their provision of PE and sport on their website, alongside details of their broader curriculum, so that parents can compare sports provision between schools, both within and beyond the school day.
Our Aims:
At St Luke’s C of E Primary School, we aim to deliver the highest quality Physical Education, sport and physical activity opportunities for all of our children.
We are committed to the Department for Education’s vision for the PE and Sport Premium funding that all pupils will leave our school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and a lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
The funding will support us to:
- Develop a high quality and broad curriculum
- Deliver opportunities for all children to take part in physical activities before school, at lunch times and after school
- Offer children opportunities to partake in competitions
- Teach our children about the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle
How are we using the funding to benefit our children?
At St. Luke’s we use the allocated funding to improve the quality and breadth of curriculum PE and sport.
We provide all children with the opportunity to be physically active and gain skills. For those children who cannot access our before and after school clubs, we offer them the opportunity to get involved with and take part in our lunch time sports and activities.
All of our clubs are extremely popular and we have a waiting list for those wanting to attend.
In addition to this, A ‘City in the Community’ coach will also run activities for the KS2 children on Tuesday lunchtimes and an after school club for KS2. Our sports coach from LSC runs and coordinates lunch time activities for pupils in KS1, together with the involvement of a team of enthusiastic lunch time organisers.
Lunch times are well organised with a variety of activities and sports available to interest the vast majority of our children.
In addition to this we are very lucky at St Luke’s to have a team of enthusiastic and committed staff who run a number of clubs including Basketball, Bollywood dancing, Funky Fitness, Football, Tag Rugby etc..
One of our main aims this year is to raise the profile of PE within the school community. This will include highlighting successes in whole school assemblies, applying for the Bronze School Games award, and displaying posters around the school to attract children’s interest.
The Curriculum
The progress of our children in P.E. lessons is being tracked by their teachers on the schools ‘Foundation Subjects Tracker’. This will ensure the needs of our children are being met by half -termly monitoring and the necessary next steps implemented.
Training
Our P.E Coordinator has continued to attend coordinator and 'networking' meetings throughout the year, ensuring we stay up to date with current issues and good practice. These meetings are very useful as it is an opportunity for staff from other local schools to get together to share good practice and organise competitions between the schools.
The ‘City in the Community’ coach and coach from LSC will be working in the school for one day each week to upskill staff and ensure they are confident in their delivery of lessons.
Resources
A range of resources have been bought to replenish and replace our current stock. This will include the purchase of new Gymnastic mats and a variety of equipment to use during lunchtimes to satisfy the interest of all the children. An extra resource for dance has been purchased so that teachers feel more confident when it comes to teaching dance lessons.
