Numeracy
Throughout our spring term, we will be focusing on Fractions and Measurement - length and perimeter and mass and capacity.
During our measurement unit, the children will learn how to use metres, centimetres and millimetres and how to convert each unit of measurement. They will also learn how to calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear shape. The children will also learn how to measure mass in grams and kilograms and how to use scales.
During our Fractions unit, the children will develop their understanding of the terminology and vocabulary required e.g. unit fraction, non-unit fraction, numerator and denominator.
This will give the children an essential foundation on which to build all their mathematic skills throughout the year. Understanding the relationship between ones, tens and hundreds is a prerequisite of arithmetic which we will work on this year.
Children will have a weekly lesson targeting their reasoning skills. Reasoning in Numeracy is the "process of applying logical and critical thinking to a mathematical problem in order to work out the correct strategy to use (and as importantly, not to use) in reaching a solution".
It is important for your child to continue practicing their times tables at home using the learning platform Times Table Rockstars, which will help them understand their tables through multiplying and dividing. Please encourage children to engage daily for a minimum of 10 minutes.
